Jim Curran's paintings are a distillation of memory, photography, drawing and observation of the wild and remote landscapes of the world.

Unashamably concerned with visual appearances, illusion, light and structure, he is fully committed to painting again, which he now does full-time.

Although best known for his award-winning films and books, drawing and painting, particularly through teaching, has always been at the core of his creative life.

For this exhibition at Sharp Edge Gallery, we have produced his first ever series of limited edition prints, all seven of which are on show and available here.

Proceeds from two of them are at a special lower-price, and will be donated to the South Asian Earthquake Appeal, the location of the paintings' subject matter.

Jim says “Two mountain paintings are set in the Karakoram range of Northern Pakistan, a country that has given me some of the most memorable experiences of my life, including expeditions to the Trango Tower in 1976 and to K2 in 1986. As a result of this recent catastrophic earthquake I have decided to produce a limited edition from them of 150 signed and numbered high quality digital prints. I hope in some small way that this will contribute something to help this ravaged country that has given me so many rich memories over the last thirty years.”

His obsession with climbing started in 1959, the year he commenced studying Fine Art at Ealing School of Art and Manchester College of Art.

He has had four one-man exhibitions of his paintings and drawings: two at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, at the Alpine Club in 2004 and most recently here at Sharp Edge Gallery. He is now painting full-time.

His paintings are proving increasingly collectible, as indicated by his Alpine Club exhibition, where most of the paintings sold.

Sundar Kanta Walker has been described by The Guardian as a creator of “enchanting and self sufficient worlds”, Sundar Kanta Walker’s work has been described as a rare example of successful cultural cross fertilization. She is also a writer and art therapist.

Although born in India, Britain has been Sundar’s home since the late 1950’s. Her work shows a mixture of the concepts, styles and methods of the western artists she admires, with an explosion of sun drenched colours and traditional symbolism from South Asian traditional art.

The gallery has produced her first ever limited edition series from six of her works, making some of her larger works accessible through smaller galleries.

Before being represented by Sharp Edge Gallery, she has had an exhibition tour starting in Blackburn and leading to Oldham, Glasgow, Kendal and international venues such as Lahore. In India her paintings are in private collections in Hyderabad and Trivandram. Her work is housed in prestigious collections at Manchester Art Gallery, Lahore and Islamabad in Pakistan as well as Germany, Holland, Southern Italy, Spain and Cumbria!

Her latest work takes on the influences of her localized environment “through Indian eyes” creating a collection of rich colourful pieces that reflect her view of the outer physical world and the potential fantasy within.

With the support of Arts Council England North West, Sundar has produced an impressive body of work covering the majestic views of Cumbrian scenery to the seeming simplistic portraits of musicians, children and the people around her. Her concerns around social and ecological issues are side by side with her playful homages to the variety of life.

Her previous exhibitions have included “Sundar Rang”at the Birla Millenium Gallery in London, “2D” and “Diverse and Dynamic” at Brixton Art Gallery and “Art at work” in Manchester.
