Jacqueline Oglesby trained as a potter at Camberwell School of Art then set up a workshop in Newcastle upon Tyne with the help of a grant from the Crafts Council. While making decorated tableware, which was sold and exhibited all over the country, she also taught part-time at three northern art colleges.

After a ten-year break while living in Spain, she has recently returned to pottery, and is now making thrown terracotta vessels.

Several layers of terra sigillata (very fine clay particles suspended in water) are painted onto the raw pots. The surface is then burnished and the design incised. After a biscuit firing, copper oxide is sponged into the lines and the pots are refired. Some areas are then masked with clay and the pots are fired for a third time in saggars filled with oak sawdust.

This strengthens the clay, produces a richer colour and darkens the unmasked areas, although the effects are unpredictable and the process may have to be repeated several times. The finished pieces are polished with a mixture of liquid beeswax and turpentine.

The surfaces of the pots are not waterproof and should be wiped clean only with a damp cloth.
